Immediately you are given the position of leadership, the first thing to do is to BUILD AND STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIP. Don’t bother about casting vision and setting goals. It’s not the right place to start. People have to buy into you before they buy into your vision. And this is done through a RELATIONSHIP with them.
There are five ways to build RELATIONSHIP with the people you lead:
A. Observe the people you lead at all times.
B. Listen to the people you lead. Listen to everyone and appreciate their ideas and suggestions. Don’t shot down their ideas and suggestions.
C. Ask questions. You are not a leader because of what you know, you are a leader because you can make right use of those who know more than you to succeed.
D. Learn from the people you lead. Have this attitude that everyone can teach me something; everyday I have to learn something; everytime I learn something, I benefit. Always tell yourself “I don’t have monopoly of knowledge”.
F. Bury your interest. Let your people’s interest takeover your body, mind soul and spirit. Be genuinely interested in them.
When you follow these, you build a strong relationship that will make you be a leader everyone wants to follow. And you will succeed in your leadership.
